Acer Aspire One – Strange Hd Noise?

09 Feb

This is a one day old Acer Aspire One. The fans are somewhat loud (sound a lot louder since the cameraphone was placed right next on the netbook itself), but my real question is, what is that stran…

306Ian is right. I have solved this problem with:sudo hdparm -B 255 /dev/sdaTo boot every time with this configuration, edit your /etc/hdparm.conf file and add:/dev/sda {apm = 255spindown_time = 0}Then run ’sudo update-rc.d hdparm defaults’

I have an Acer Aspire and I get the same strange sound. I am using Debian. I have others laptops (none is Acer), I they don’t do this sound. Do you think this sound means HDD is broken or it is normal? Please answer. If it is normal I don’t care but if broken I have still the warranty.

I managed to stop the HDD clicking on my AA1 running Linpus by installing “hdparm” from add/remove software and typing this into terminal “sudo hdparm -B 255 /dev/sda” without the quotes.

First of all, I’m not expecting the computer to be silent. Secondly, you claim that this is normal, and that every HD makes this noise….Hold up another laptop to year ear and listen for this… funny how neither of my external drives make a constant noise every 5 seconds, nor have my other laptops. Care to explain to me what it is?And yes it does bother me. It’s not super quiet, I can hear it above the fans when they are running.

every HDD does that thing every 5 seconds or so. you won’t even hear it unless it is completly silent. does it really bother you? try hitting every key on the keyboard, you will notice that every key will sound different. whatever

every hard drive does not click. Acer are aware of the problem. It can be stopped when using XP/Vista. Mine does it also when using Linpus and it is annoying.

dude u are insane, this is perfectly normal for a normal person. also i think it is hard to hear in an office environment. but since you are paranoid, there is nothing i can do for u.

Just thought i’d say, its a lot more obvious towards the end of the video, when I put the camera down. You’ll need to turn the volume up to hear it! also, it is present even when the computer is idle (ie, not live updating as shown)
