In the market for a convertible notebook?

24 Aug

My husband has his heart set on a convertible notebook for his college graduation and I have to admit that I know very little about this type of notebook.

Gateway seems to have a good deal: for a few upgrades (faster processing speed and some accessories) they want 1285 or so.

is gateway a good company? are there any companies that you can recommend?

Best computers (laptop) on the market?

05 Mar

Okay, so my mother had a Gateway and I had a Toshiba, both suck. My mum’s Gateway just stopped one day (she treated it well) and it fried her hard drive (It had happened to my cousin’s Gateway too). My Toshiba had terrible heating problems, and died from my bad care and over-heating too much. Aside from those two brands, which laptops/computers are best?

As with most of the netbooks on the market, the Aspire One is based on the new Intel Atom N270 processor

02 Jan

The new design was attractive but the new models were considerably more expensive than the original white plastic ones. Amid the recession, Apple decided to keep the old white plastic Macbook on sale as well, in order to provide a less expensive alternative.

At a starting price of $629 ($749 for our configuration), the U350 is less affordable than a 12-inch Netbook such as the Lenovo IdeaPad S12, while not as expensive as some professional-grade thin-and-lights such as the Lenovo ThinkPad T400s. And as such, it’s a success.

The batteries in a few Lenovo ThinkPad laptop models aren’t holding their own, and now the company is offering to replace them.As a result, even though laptop ads typically caution that Thinkpad X60 battery life varies with use, AMD claims consumers often find their machines run out of juice long before they thought they would.

Adobe Photoshop CS2: A small, non-complex image opens and the software applies and undoes each set of artistic filter enhancements (11 sets in all). After this has completed, a much larger and complex image is loaded and the same filters are applied,HP Mini 1000 Battery , at a much slower rate as the image takes longer to manipulate due to its size. After these tasks have been completed, the benchmark ends.

As with most of the netbooks on the market, the Aspire One is based on the new Intel Atom N270 processor. This single core processors uses very little power yet and still manage basic internet and basic applications alright. To keep the costs down though, Acer  has equipped the Aspire One with just 512MB of memory on it. This isn’t an issue with the Linux OS but upgrading it to the maximum 1.5GB really helps performance. Upgrading can be a challenge though.

3ds max 8.0: A file is opened showing a wireframe of an underwater scene, which is rendered by the software, with a cartoon-looking lizard appearing in a second window in the background towards the very end. As soon as this rendering is complete, a three-dimensional mouse bearing more than a close resemblance to Stuart Little is quickly rendered, and as this completes, a dragon in its environment is rendered. Once these are all finished, the benchmark concludes.

It won’t be the lightest laptop on campus this fall, and it may not fit into every knapsack or laptop bag, but if you’re willing and able to tote around a little extra weight, the Sony(Sony VGP-BPS2A battery) Vaio VGN-NW125J/T holds great appeal for its big, cinematic display and roomy keyboard. The software bundle is a winner, too, with a full version of Microsoft Office and 12 months of Norton Internet Security. (Make sure you get the discs at purchase; on our test system, only the trials of Office and Norton were preinstalled and no CDs were in the box. We’ve heard various customers report similar occurrences.)

Which Is The Most Feasible Laptop In The Market Today?

21 Dec

Laptops are becoming as common as cell phones and there are so many brands on the market today. Trying to select the most feasible laptop really depends on personal choice and usage. If we look at the laptops on the market each extols their features.

However most have the same features in common. Processors, chipsets, size of hard disk drives, DVD players, wireless interface are found on all the laptops. Of course all the other standard features are also there. Like network ports, USB ports, serial port, etc.

Right now it’s the Intel Duo core processors that have taken the market by storm. But there are multiple features that a user wants from their laptop. Some want to use their laptop for gaming so want high speed processors. Others want to listen to music while they are working and want high quality speakers. Still others require high quality graphics. Students want laptops that are lightweight as they have to be carried all over the campus. Elderly people also want lightweight computers. Some people want widescreen laptops.

The individual requirements for laptops are so diverse that one single laptop cannot fulfill all the needs. Laptop manufacturers are busy in trying to add more features and make their laptops more versatile. Here it is not only the American laptop makers that are in stiff competition. There are laptop manufacturers world wide. All are trying to gain a sizeable niche in the world of laptops.

So when you are in the market for a laptop, first access your requirements. Is the weight of the laptop a consideration for you? Should the laptop be so tough that it can withstand falls or weights falling on them? What is the absolute essential size of hard disk you require? How fast should the processor speed be? How much battery time you require? After you have decided on what you are looking for then do a search for a suitable laptop.

Price will also be a major consideration and you want your laptop to work for a long time. Also the type of warranties that are offered by laptop makers has to be taken into account. Some people want international warranties as they do a lot of traveling. You may change your cell phone after every couple of months but not your laptop. Your laptop is going to be around for a long time.

Laptops have become the life support systems for a number of people globally. Journalists, business executives, students, and many other people have now become totally dependent on their laptops. So buying a feasible laptop is a big decision. What you want is a laptop that suits your needs, gives you the battery time you want and is not a burden to carry around.

Finding a suitable and feasible laptop is not difficult once you know what you need. Do some research; look at reviews on the different brands and models available. This little homework will help to narrow down your choices. Then you should be able to find a suitable laptop that will meet your current and future requirements.

In the Market for a Laptop? Do your Homework Before you Buy

12 Nov

If you are looking for a laptop then consider some of the models we have researched below before making a decision.

If you are looking for a laptop that has a 17 inch viewable screen and that is under $1,000 then look no further. The Toshiba Satellite P205-S6237 is here. According to Cisco Cheng of PC Magazine, “it joins the Acer Aspire 9300-5005 as one of the few sub-$1,000 17-inch systems. At 7.3 pounds, though, the Toshiba is not only lighter than the Acer but also performs better.”

Gateway another brand manufacturing laptops has put performance over design however the T-140X, however, signals a change of pace. It is a 14-inch widescreen, with a choice of colors and designs laminated into the lid and palm rests. But to keep the price low, according to Cheng, “Gateway went with weak processing components, hurting performance.”

Acer introduces new this month the Aspire 5920G. According to Carla Thornton of PC World, “it bears Acers Gemstone design, which features a glossy lid, a putty-colored keyoboard, accent curves, and a custom button that looks like a blue-quartz jewel.” The laptop which features a subwoofer, “isn`t just pretty,” continues Thornton. “It`s a home and office workhorse with a panoply of attractive multimedia features.”

Another new rugges laptop is the GoBook MR-1 from Itronix. With its lightweight design, it is built to withstand rain, snow, wind and many other elements that could be harmful to your machine. It hasa touchscreen that traps ambient light so they can not reflect out and cause glare.

According to Sean Captain of Popular Science, “The Itronix screen employs a new technology called DynaVue to block most of these reflections. It uses the LCD`s polarizing films, plus extra filters to twist the incoming light to an orientation that can`t pass back out of the screen.”

Then of course there is always the big guy of the industry, Dell. Dell has done their part in using Intel`s Centrino Duo chipset. The Dell Laptop that is a highpoint is the XPS M1330, which according to Cheng, “has unseated the Lenovo ThinkPad X60 (Vista) as my Choice for ultraportables.” Cheng continues, “it`s the sum total of everything that`s cutting-edge in the ultraportable market today.” With its cleek design it includes a 160GB hard drive, DVD burner, webcam, and you can add a media center that fits nicely into the ExpressCard slot.

The M1330 weighs 3.9 pounds when you include the 4 cell batery, and that it allows it to stay just below the limit of 4 pounds to be considered an ultraportable. Larger batteries are available for the M1330, however the will put it above the 4 pound limit if you are looking for ultra.

In this article I have given a brief review and overview on a variety of latops from various companies. Being a laptop fan myself, with their ease of use, portability, and the ever growing power they can offer, you may want to look into one of these models, especially if you are student or a traveling business person.

Netbooks : Taking the market share away from laptops

07 Sep

ASUS generated a lot of buzz with its Eee-branded line of products, starting with the Eee PC netbook

and is responsible for introducing the netbook to the PC market as an affordable and simple laptop

solution for students.

A netbook (a portmanteau of the words Internet and notebook) is a small portable laptop computer

designed for wireless communication and access to the Internet.

By late 2008, netbooks had begun to take market share away from laptops. It is estimated that almost

thirty times more netbooks were sold in 2008 (11.4 mn) than in 2007 (400,000).

After the release of the ASUS’s Eee PC, almost every major PC vendor HP, Sony, MSI, Toshiba, Acer,

Dell have released competing models. Some companies design them in different directions away from

the original Eee PC and they got bigger, more powerful, more expensive, and have even become luxury

items. Furthermore, Windows XP has dominated over Linux as the installed operating system.

ASUS range
1.    ASUS Eee PC 701 4G: with Xandros version of Linux, had a 4GB solid state drive, a small 7in

screen, 512MB of RAM and an Intel Celeron M CPU, also available in a variety of color at a cost of $349.
2.    ASUS Eee PC 900: With slightly bigger 8.9in screen, but it has more storage and RAM and is

available with either or operating system versions.
3.    ASUS Eee PC 901: based on the Intel Atom N270 (1.6GHz) CPU, Gigabit Ethernet and 802.11n

wireless networking with 6-cell battery, sleeker but heavier model has an 8.9in screen, 1GB of RAM and

was available with either Linux (20GB storage) or Windows XP (12GB storage)  operating systems

installed. It cost $472.
4.    ASUS Eee PC 1000H: with its spinning hard drive it gives little more speed than those solid state

drive-based models. Features are same as Eee PC 901 with 10in screen and little closer to a

conventional notebook but it only cost $509.
5.    ASUS Eee PC 1000HE: with new “Chiclet keyboard” that provides wider gaps between the keys to

improve key travel, it includes a 10in screen, 160GB hard drive, 1GB of RAM and an Intel Atom N270

1.6GHz CPU, cost $654.

HP range
HP was the 2nd vendor after ASUS to introduce a netbook to the market.
1.    HP 2133 Mini-Note PC aims at business users, not students. It had an 8.9in screen, a VIA C7-M

CPU (1.6GHz), 2GB of RAM, a huge 160GB hard drive, and it was the first netbook to run Windows Vista

Business edition. It also had an ExpressCard/54 slot, making it a desirable choice for users wanting to

use a 3G data card. It cost $499 at release.
2.    HP Mini 1001TU: with $399 price tag, smaller and cooler than the 2133 Mini-Note, it is based on an

Intel Atom N270 CPU (1.6GHz), 1GB of RAM, a 60GB hard drive and 802.11g wireless networking but a

bigger 10.2in screen.
3.    HP Mini 2140: features are similar to the 2133 Mini-Note but an Intel Atom CPU instead of a VIA

C7-M CPU and the option to use Windows Vista Business or Windows XP.

MSI Wind U100
MSI was the 3rd vendor to enter the netbook market. With its white color, a 10in screen, an 80GB hard

drive, 1GB RAM, ran Windows XP, and Intel’s Atom N270 CPU (1.6GHz) it provides excellent battery life

through its 6-cell battery. Its price was $509 at launch.

Acer Range
The next vendor was Acer with its Linpus-based Aspire One netbooks.
Acer Aspire One: It has an 8.9in screen, weighed only 900 grams, 512MB of RAM available at a cost of

$436. It has an 8GB solid state drive installed, but also included two SD memory card slots but there is

also a Windows XP version available with 1.5GB of RAM and a 120GB hard drive for $509.
Acer Aspire One AOD 150: It is a 10.2in version with 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, 1GB RAM, 160GB hard

drive, Windows XP, but it does have the best screen quality for a netbook.

Dell range
1.    Dell Inspiron Mini 9: It has an 8.9in screen, a solid state drive (16GB), an Intel Atom N270 CPU

(1.6GHz), and 1GB of RAM. Despite its poor design, the Mini 9 was the unit of choice for mobile phone

vendors.
2.    Dell Inspiron Mini 12: It has a 10.2in screen, uses an Intel Atom Z530 (1.6GHz) CPU rather than an

N270 model, runs Windows XP, 1GB of RAM, and an 80GB hard drive. Due to the 3-cell battery, the Mini

12 has poor battery life, and at $618 it is an expensive unit considering you does not even get 802.11n

wireless networking.

Lenovo IdeaPad S10
Lenovo’s IdeaPad S10 netbook is more in the news because the Department of Education and

Training’s choose it for teachers and students. It’s a deal set to be worth $109 million and will roll out

267,000 units.
The Lenovo netbook was chosen over other has nice styling, runs Windows XP, has a 160GB hard

drive, a 10in screen, and 1GB of RAM. Those specifications are standard, but the notebook has an

ExpressCard/34 expansion slot. The IdeaPad S10 does offer increased drive capacity which may be of

benefit when running memory intensive applications.

Toshiba NB100
It is an 8.9in, Windows XP-based netbook with an Intel Atom N270 (1.6GHz) CPU, 1GB of RAM and a

120GB hard drive. Added advantage “the sleep-and-charge USB port” for $520 it is a little overpriced, but

it is a convenient laptop to use while travelling.

Fujitsu M1010
The M1010 is small 8.9in screen, but feature-rich, as it includes an ExpressCard/34 slot. It is based on

an Intel Atom N270 CPU (1.6GHz), 1GB RAM, and has a 60GB hard drive. It costs $509.

Sony P-series
The Sony Vaio P comes preinstalled with Windows Vista Home Premium or Windows Vista Business, it

has an 8″ LED-backlit display with resolution of 1600×768, weighs 1.4-1.7 pounds, with either a 1.33

GHz Intel Atom Z520 or a 1.6 GHz Atom Z530 processor, and 2GB DDR2 memory with 533 MHz FSB,

64GB or 128GB solid state drive storage. An integrated webcam is located on the upper right corner. It

also features built-in GPS, Bluetooth, 802.11 b/g/n wireless, mobile broadband, and an Intel Graphics

Media Accelerator 500 video card. It is available in four color options; Black, Red, Green, and White.

Samsung Range
1.    Samsung NC10: It uses a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, 10.2″ screen with 1024×600 pixels

and includes 1 GB of memory 93% keyboard size, 160 GB hard drive and 6-celled battery. It also

includes an SD card slot, supporting MMC, SD and SDHC cards for additional storage.
2.    The Samsung NC20: With LED-backlit 12.1″ screen it uses a VIA Nano ULV Processor U2250

(1.3+GHz, 800MHz), and includes 1 GB RAM, a full-size keyboard, SATA 160 GB storage.
The company claims both netbooks kill bacteria with its anti-bacterial Silver Nano ions coating on the

keyboard.
